Counting by 2’s
Have your child find all (or maybe some) of the pairs of shoes (clogs) in your house and practice counting by 2’s.
Another idea is to paint your child’s feet red and have them walk across a large piece of butcher paper and then count their steps by 2’s.
Show Me the Money Song (learning coins)
Peter Pig’s Money Counter Online Game (choose easy)
Discuss the following time references with your child and ask them to tell something that relates to them using these references. Then, see if they can find them in the story.

One evening when the sun was going down,….
The sun was just setting
May it be fine tomorrow!

The very next day
it’s getting late
A long, long time has passed since then.
Bible and Character Training
Using yellow to show light:
Notice with your child throughout A Pair of Red Clogs that the artist used yellow to show light. You can just discuss this or have your child give it a shot with something simple.
Using color pencil and black ink as your medium:
Showing action in figures:
We got the idea of making our action figures from pipe cleaners here.
Talk about what reminiscing means with your child. Make sure they know that reminiscing is when you tell a story from the past. Tell your child a story from their past. Then watch this video about past tense verbs.
Expressing sounds through words
In A Pair of Red Clogs the author used words to describe the sound of clogs on an old stone road. Point this out to your child, then ask you child to make some noise and try to describe the sound with words. Example, hit pan lids together and then say bang, clang, clap!
For now just make your child aware of what the sign is called and have them look for it in the book. Explain that the hyphen between these words joins them together.
Fun Compound Video to do with you child.
Break it Up Compound Words Online Game
Have your child try to find the compound words in A Pair of Red Clogs. They are listed below. Another suggestion would be to make a game with index cards, or better yet, if you can add these words to pictures of clogs to make a pair and match up each half of the compound word. You could also write the words whole of the index cards and have your child cut them apart and then put them back together.
Cl blend words
Clogs is a cl blend word. Ask your child is they can think of any other words that start with the cl sound?

(We used pipe cleaners to make our “action figure.”)
(We learned about magma and lava.)
(We wrote a Haiku poem.)
(We learned about Japan, weather and the seasons.)

I adore this post for reminding me HOW TO PRAISE my children. I know this trick from my years of teaching preschool, but I had forgotten as of late. I am excited to implement this style of praise and watch the results.
Most homeschool parents would agree that the joy of spending every moment with their child is that they are able to witness their child’s learning experiences, daily, moment-by-moment and can rejoice in every development!
Successful homeschooling is not only measured in how many facts were memorized, or the skills mastered, a story narrated in detail, pages filled with neat handwriting, an emerging reader reading fluently, the brilliant maths wiz kid, talented, great all-rounders.
Success also comes when we work through struggles, difficult transitions, and find the child’s unique learning style and make the connections.
Feedback is vital to this growth and learning.
I’m not promoting gushing praise. I’m talking about specific feedback, detailed observations, carefully worded encouragement.
As a teacher, when I commented on something good I noticed on someone’s page, the whole class perked up. That specific child was boosted, naturally, but it reinforced to all in the class…

6. Glory for God
Pray a prayer of thanks that the Lord is always with us during times where the world is against us, and that for strength and patience in times of struggle or resistance.
Homemaking with heart has a great idea here. This is inspired me to do something like this at home with my children. I don’t know that my relatives would be as pleased with my children digging around their house although I do see how that would be MORE FUN! I plan to ask around the family and add things that I have as well, such as quilts, pictures, letters, jewels, and also things from thier childhood and mine. This is such a wonderful idea! and the rabbit holes you could follow with this are endless. 🙂
